Job Summary: Step Down Unit Registered Nurse (RN) — Nights | Omaha, NE
A Step Down Unit RN will provide patient care across PCU (including oncology) and MedSurg settings, supporting adults with complex medical needs. Responsibilities include bedside nursing care with a focus on hourly rounding, managing step-down level patients, and participating in safe delivery of care in a fast-paced environment. Candidates are required to bring their license on the first day of employment.
Job Details:
- Schedule: Nights; 12-hour shifts; minimum 36 hours per week.
- Required Qualifications: Valid RN license (license required at submission); Basic Life Support (BLS) (American Heart Association (AHA)); Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) (American Heart Association (AHA)); Oncology Nursing Society/ONCC (ONS/ONCC) (required); At least 2 years of experience as an RN (minimum); Ability to titrate select drips (including insulin occasionally and cardizem); Experience with ventilator and hemodynamic monitoring (including capabilities such as CVP, Aline, Swan, EV-1000); Willingness to work with hourly rounding practices.
- Preferred Qualifications: Oncology experience; Chemo certification (preferred); Familiarity with Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems within the prior 6 months (not a deal breaker, informational for onboarding).
- Additional Information:
- Unit supports mixed acuity adult patients, including oncology and trauma.
- One-to-five to six patient ratio on nights (as stated); typical PCU ratios include 1 RN to 4 PCU patients and 1 RN to 5 Med/Surg patients (days stated in the position details).
- Weekend requirements: every other weekend; self-scheduling is supported.
- Orientation length: 2 days.
- Float: float may be required within the same level of care.
- Artificial nails are prohibited in all departments providing patient care.
- Required training includes passing an orientation exam process (open-book exam on skills learned) with a required passing threshold as described in unit notes.
- Nursing Assistant support, charge nurse coverage, and additional unit support staff (PT/OT, RN case manager, social work, educator, dietician) are available.
