Job Summary
Operating Room (First Assistant) First Assist Congenital Cardiac Nurse — South Portland, Maine. This role provides surgical first-assist support for congenital cardiac procedures, partnering with the surgical team to support safe, patient-centered care. The First Assist Congenital Cardiac Nurse (RNFA) assists with procedures for pediatric and adult patients with congenital heart defects. Candidates are required to bring their license on the first day.

Job Details

  • Schedule: Days shift; 12 hours per shift; minimum 36 hours per week.
  • Required Qualifications: Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in Maine; completion of an accredited RNFA program; Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification; Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification; and surgical first-assist techniques and sterile field management.
  • Preferred Qualifications: CNOR (Certified Nurse Operating Room) certification; demonstrated expertise in congenital cardiac surgery; and experience with first-assist support aligned with surgeon preferences and patient needs.
  • Responsibilities:
    • Serve as the first assist to the surgeon during congenital cardiac surgeries, including tasks such as tissue handling, wound closure, and hemostasis.
    • Anticipate the surgeon’s needs and help optimize the operating room environment for efficiency and safety.
    • Collaborate in the preoperative assessment and preparation of patients for congenital cardiac procedures.
    • Support postoperative care through wound management, monitoring recovery, and providing patient education.
    • Partner with surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, and operating room staff to support seamless surgical workflows.
    • Participate in multidisciplinary rounds to support continuity of care.
    • Mentor and educate nursing staff on congenital cardiac procedures and assistive techniques.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.
