May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, which provides an opportunity to celebrate the rich history, culture, and contributions of AAPI individuals and communities.

<div class="text"><p>May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, which provides an opportunity to celebrate the rich history, culture, and contributions of AAPI individuals and communities. However, this year’s AAPI Heritage Month takes on an added significance in light of the recent surge in anti-Asian hate crimes and discrimination.</p>

<p>As we celebrate and recognize the accomplishments of AAPI individuals and communities, it’s also important to acknowledge the racism and discrimination that many AAPI individuals continue to face. This is a time to stand in solidarity, to listen to their stories, and learn (and teach) more about the culture of the AAPI community.</p>

<p>Here are some educational resources that can help you learn more about the AAPI experience and how to support the AAPI community:</p>

  <li> <a href="https://asianpacificheritage.gov/for-teachers/" target="_blank">AsianPacificHeritage.gov</a> offers a range of free curriculum and resources for teachers. </li>

   <li>	The <a href="https://www.nea.org/professional-excellence/student-engagement/tools-tips/teaching-asian-and-pacific-islander-heritage" target="_blank">NEA</a> offers tips and tools for teaching Asian and Pacific Islander heritage, along with lesson plans grouped by elementary, middle, and high school level. </li>

  <li> The <a href="https://www.zinnedproject.org/materials/asian-americans-and-moments-in-peoples-history/" target="_blank">Zinned Project</a> highlights some influential Asian-Americans that your classroom can dive into this May, with more than 20 Asian Americans and events of note in people’s history for the curriculum and as a starting point for students to do further research. </li>
</ul>

<p> It’s important to remember that allyship, solidarity and learning are ongoing efforts. We must continue to listen, learn, and take action to combat racism and discrimination against all.</p>
