As the school year winds down, classrooms start to feel different. Schedules shift, routines may loosen and there’s often less structure. While this time can be exciting, for some students, it can also bring uncertainty, restlessness and dysregulation.&nbsp;

<h2>Why Transition Can Be Hard</h2>
What may look like students “checking out” is often something more human: a reaction to change. The end of the school year means stepping away from routines, environments and relationships that have felt predictable and safe. As one source notes, “the shift from structured school days to unstructured time can feel overwhelming for many children.”&nbsp;
Even when students are excited for summer, there can still be a sense of loss or uncertainty. Schools provide more than just academics- they offer consistency, connection and rhythm, and when that changes, students feel it.&nbsp;
<h2>How Educators Can Help</h2>
As educators, especially BIIs and SpEd Aides, you may be supporting students during this time without shaping their schedules or structures. Even so, your role still matters deeply.&nbsp;
Supporting students through transition doesn’t have to require big changes. Oftentimes, it may look like small, intentional actions repeated consistently throughout the day. Consider supporting students by:

 <li>Priming: “Today will look a little different, we have an assembly later.”&nbsp;</li>
 <li>Naming what you notice: “It seems like today it might feel a little harder to focus.”&nbsp;</li>
 <li>Keeping some things consistent: your greeting, your tone, your expectations&nbsp;</li>
 <li>Offering simple choices to give students a sense of control&nbsp;</li>
 <li>Ending interactions on a neutral or positive note, even after a hard moment&nbsp;</li>
</ul>

These small moments help students feel grounded when everything else around them may feel like it's shifting.&nbsp;
<h2>Is Progress Impacted?</h2>
It’s also important to remember that progress isn’t always linear- especially during times of change. A student who has been doing well may still have difficult days, but remember, that doesn’t erase their growth. It simply reflects the reality of navigating transition.&nbsp;
If anything, this time of year is less about pushing for progress and more about helping students finish the year feeling safe, respected and supported. It can also be helpful to remember that support doesn’t end when the school year does. When appropriate, sharing simple, accessible resources with students and families can help maintain a sense of continuity during the break.&nbsp;
The end of the school year isn’t just a finish line; it’s a transition point. How students experience that transition matters. You may not be able to shape what comes next, but you can influence how students feel as they move through the final weeks.
