It’s Better Speech and Hearing Month, and we’re proud to feature Kenise C., a deaf and hard of hearing itinerant teacher who is dedicated to helping the students she serves learn to advocate for themselves in school and beyond.

<p>May is Better Speech and Hearing Month, and to celebrate, we’re spotlighting an inspiring, dedicated and supportive deaf and hard of hearing itinerant teacher, Kenise C. We asked Kenise to share a recent success she’s had this year working with students. Here’s what she had to say:</p><ul><li>“This year has challenged me to think outside the box and come up with new ways to support my students. Even with all the challenges, there has been great success. This year, I have seen students who were afraid to speak up in class step outside of their shell and advocate for their needs.</li><li><br></li><li>One of my students started the year off emailing all his teachers about the impact of his disability and strategies that can be used in the academic setting that will allow him to have access. Hearing this made me so proud!!</li><li><br></li><li>This year, I have 5 seniors on my caseload, and I am happy to say that they have all committed to colleges of their choice: MSMU, CSUN, CSULA, NYU and CSUEB!! They will be leaving high school with the tools they need to advocate for themselves as adults in the post-secondary setting. I am honored to have the opportunity to aid my students in pursuing their dreams.
