This time, we're spotlighting one of our outstanding DIS counselors, Maja S.</p><p>Here's why Maja decided to become a DIS counselor, what she enjoys most about working with the Cross Country Education team and schools, and what advice she has for DIS counselors starting their careers.</p><h3>Why did you become a DIS Counselor?</h3><p>After working with adults in substance abuse treatment the past four years, I decided to go back to what originally got me into the field of counseling: kids and teens. I have always loved the school environment and wanted to work with younger people growing and going through life transitions. I also recognized that schools might be needing extra help after what was a very challenging period of social isolation and possible loss in various skills during the pandemic.</p><h3>What do you like about Cross Country Education (CCE)?</h3><p>I found the process of getting hired and starting work in a school to be easier and quicker than I ever would have imagined, and I credit my caseworker Amber for all her help in allowing it to be so. I liked that my request to be in schools closest to where I live to be met and respected.</p><h3>What have you liked about working at the schools with CCE?</h3><p>The administration and staff at the schools have been wonderful. I have met many friendly, caring, competent, and professionals who are passionate about their work with students.</p><h3>What advice would you give someone starting as a DIS counselor?</h3><p>I think with any new job, giving yourself time and compassion for learning the new systems, people, environment, and culture at your new place of work is key. It can be a lot to take in all at once and there will be many things that change over the course of the year, including your opinion on how much you like it or how comfortable you are. These things change as you get to know the new environment.
