This week, we are celebrating sign language interpreter Sarah B. Sarah shares why she decided to become a sign language interpreter (SLI), what she loves most about working with the Cross Country Education team and schools, and what she would tell SLIs just embarking on their careers.</p><h2>Why did you become an SLI?</h2><p>I became an SLI because of a passion for the Deaf community that began in high school. I later graduated from UNCG's Professions in Deafness program. It was an amazing and challenging program, and the individuals I met in the Deaf community, along with my mentors and colleagues, have helped shape me. I'm humbled by the opportunities I've been given and the incredible people I've met throughout my career thus far.&nbsp;</p><h2>What do you like about working with Cross Country Education?</h2><p>I love the opportunity Cross Country Education offers me: the opportunity to travel, to see new places, to meet new people, and to step out of my own comfort for new experiences. Before joining the Cross Country Education team, the farthest I had traveled was Florida. Now I'm living in WA and absolutely loving it! The CCE staff, especially my recruiter Kirstin Small, have been nothing but incredible. Kirstin is a huge reason for my love of this company! She is professional and personable and always checks in to see how my family and I are doing. She has been a strong support for me during the "moving across the country" transition and continues to be so. I am incredibly thankful she opened the door for my current placement.&nbsp;</p><h2>What kind of advice would you give to those starting out in your field?</h2><p>Flexibility is incredibly important as well as learning to trust yourself. I've learned this field can be competitive, so it's key to surround yourself with positive, encouraging people who want to see you grow as an interpreter. Pay attention to your mental and physical health and be sure to take care of yourself. Be humble. Seek mentorship from seasoned interpreters.
