Corrective feedback is a vital part of any job in education and your ability to accept feedback demonstrates a willingness to learn from the perspectives and expertise of others. Corrective feedback can help us all become more aware of our blind spots and areas of improvement (Reid, et al., 2021). Furthermore, accepting feedback graciously strengthens professional relationships and fosters trust through open communication. BIIs should consistently work on their ability to receive and implement feedback from others (LeBlanc, et al., 2020). Receiving feedback can be difficult and even emotionally triggering at times. It’s important to develop the tools needed to effectively self-regulate and approach feedback with humility and gratitude.
<h3>Tips to improve your tolerance of feedback:</h3>
1.Identify how you like to receive feedback and communicate this preference: Some individuals prefer to receive feedback in the moment, while others prefer to wait until there’s a transition or “down time” in the school day. Some BIIs prefer face-to-face feedback, while others prefer written feedback via email. Reflect and determine how you prefer to receive constructive feedback.
2.Utilize coping and self-regulation strategies: If you find yourself becoming overwhelmed with emotion or anxiety after hearing feedback from a supervisor, take this time to practice self-regulation and coping strategies (e.g., deep breathing, counting to ten before responding, etc.)
3.Remember that the feedback usually isn’t personal: Feedback is meant to help you grow, not to tear you down. Try to approach feedback with positivity and an open mind.
<h3>Ways to demonstrate you are receptive to feedback:</h3>
1.Accept the feedback: Remember that the feedback is intended to help you improve your skills as a BII. Listen actively to the feedback without interrupting. If you feel the feedback is incorrect, remember that the feedback provider will have many more opportunities to observe and evaluate your work.
2.Restate the feedback you received: Summarizing demonstrates that you understand the feedback. It also shows that you are invested in your own professional development.
3.Clarify: If something is unclear, don’t hesitate to ask for clarification. Make sure you fully understand the feedback before responding. If the feedback is vague, it’s okay to ask for specific examples or instances to better understand areas for improvement (Kazemi, et al., 2019).
4.Thank the feedback provider: Thank the feedback provider for taking the time to help you improve your skills. Express gratitude to demonstrate professionalism and a willingness to learn.
5.Reflect: Take time to reflect on the feedback. Consider how the feedback aligns with your own observations and experiences.
6.Develop an action plan: Work with your supervisor to develop an action plan for addressing the feedback. Set specific goals and timelines to track your progress. Use the feedback as a learning opportunity to improve your performance. Incorporate the feedback into your daily practice and strive for continual growth.
7.Follow up: Periodically check in with your supervisor to update them on your progress and discuss any ongoing concerns or challenges.
8.Solicit feedback: One of the best ways to demonstrate your commitment to the students you service is to voluntarily ask for feedback. The most skilled BIIs are not afraid of correction, and if fact, welcome it! By approaching feedback in a constructive and proactive manner, BIIs can leverage it as a valuable tool for professional development and growth.
