It’s Better Speech and Hearing Month, and we’re proud to feature Eryn G. – an SLP who is dedicated to helping the students she serves build confidence in their language abilities.

<p>May is Better Speech and Hearing Month, and to celebrate, we’re spotlighting a compassionate, dedicated, and caring SLP, Eryn G. We asked Eryn to share a recent success she’s had this year working with a student. Here is what she had to say:</p><ul><li>“I had the wonderful opportunity of working with a few high school students this year. I really enjoy working with this age group because we are able to witness their confidence increase as their speech and/or language skills improve.</li><li><br></li><li>I was working with one student in particular who was incredibly shy in the beginning and would not turn on her camera. She always attended sessions and was highly compliant and respectful, however, it took a few sessions for her to feel comfortable opening up to me. She had several language goals but what was fun and interesting was that by repeatedly reminding her that she had strong listening comprehension skills and maybe this no longer was an area of difficulty, she finally said, "Hey, maybe I'm good at this!" And so, she is.</li><li><br></li><li>Those are the moments I feel are the most successful because that is a life skill we take for granted. I feel these students hear about their challenges and know they have IEPs, so they forget (or just don't know), that these areas don't have to remain a weakness or challenge. They don't have to be "bad at listening comprehension." Some of their biggest weaknesses can become their greatest strengths regardless of the starting point, and to watch a student have that realization is a powerful and inspiring moment.
