School SLP Beverly P. shares about her motivation for becoming a school SLP and advice for speech therapists just embarking on their careers.

This time, we’re spotlighting an outstanding speech-language pathologist, Beverly P.!</p><p>Here, Beverly shares why she decided to become a speech-language pathologist, what she enjoys most about working with the Cross Country Education team and schools, and what advice she has for school SLPs just embarking on their careers.</p><h3>Why did you become a speech-language pathologist?</h3><p>When I first went to college, I planned on becoming a buyer, but I wasn’t interested in the courses that were required for that field, so for a while, I was unsure of what I wanted to declare for a major. Then I heard one of my co-workers at a restaurant where I was working part-time talk about speech therapy, something I had never considered. It sounded perfect! I remember having to go to a speech therapist when I was in first grade and decided that a career helping students would be very rewarding.</p><h3>What do you like about CCE?</h3><p>I like the responsiveness from the staffing professionals at CCE. They are always trying to find the perfect fit for me.</p><h3>What have you liked about working at the schools with CCE?</h3><p>When I need more time to service all the students or money for materials, CCE has been able to make that happen with the districts where I have been placed.</p><h3>What advice would you give someone starting out as an SLP?</h3><p>Don’t limit yourself to one area as a speech pathologist. Try working in several areas to broaden your understanding of the profession. If you are going to work in schools, see if you can teach for a year or two or shadow a teacher for a while to get a better understanding of what is going on in the classroom. Your therapy will be better if you coordinate it with the classroom lessons.
